a5c7b9f00b A man wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. is offered his freedom if he can rescue the president's daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates.
In 2079, in Washington, the ex-CIA Operative Snow is brutally interrogated, accused of treason against the United States. The chief of the secret service Scott Langral believes that he shot the agent Frank in a hotel room. Meanwhile, the idealistic daughter of the president of the USA, Emilie Warnock, is visiting MS One, a maximum security prison in outer space expecting to find evidence that the prisoners are actually guinea pigs of a huge corporation. When one of her bodyguards loses a hidden pistol to the dangerous prisoner Hydell, he subdues the staff in the central control room and releases the prisoners, including his brother Alex who becomes the leader of the riot. Now the veteran agent Harry Shaw offers freedom to Snow if he succeeds in rescuing the president's daughter. But the idealistic Emilie does not want to leave MS-One without the hostages.
I honestly had no idea how I would review this film. I had to watch the film twice. Have you ever been stumped by a film because you weren't sure if you liked it or not? It confused me because there is one standout about this film that threw me or a loop. I've had multiple arguments about this movie with my film fan friends.<br/><br/>Lockout is that movie. This B action film from Luc Besson, producer of Taken & The Fifth Element, is in the vein of Die Hard and Escape From New York. But the film plays out more Escape From New York than anything. And the thing that stumped me was the performance by Guy Pearce will blow your mind. He is the saving grace, the main reason to see this film. He plays Snow, an ex special agent framed for a high end murder. But when the president's daughter, played by Maggie Grace, gets taken hostage in a high facility space prison, he's the man to call.<br/><br/>Pearce's Snow is John McClane and Snake Plisken all wrapped up in a awesome embodiment. He's a smart ass, arrogant, but intelligent, tactical and a blast to watch. Without him this film fails on all levels. I couldn't understand how his performance is so high but the movie at times is lackluster. This character needs another film with a competent action film director. That's how much I loved Snow. I want him in at least another action film. I don't care if it is a sequel or a prequel.<br/><br/>Maggie Grace is in her best role I've seen. (Yes that includes her stint on LOST) Her snarky, spunky liberal heart character plays great off of Snow. Their chemistry is natural and at time hilariously awkward. Their first full screen screen conversation is laugh out loud funny. I couldn't understand how in a movie like this I was so thrilled just watching these characters.<br/><br/>The action other than the opening is very scarce. It mostly comes down to Snow getting to hand to hand fights with prisoners or small traps that he sets. There is a bike/car chase that I still don't know how it got put to film. It is pretty ridiculous and gratuitously CG. I'm sure that this is probably because of the budget. But it takes you out of the film.<br/><br/>This is a Netflix watch (which I did) but it's going to entertain. Guy Pearce is so goodSnow, I think in time he may go downone of the coolest action heroes in film. The movie around him just doesn't give enough substance for the entire film to thrive. Even if I have to write the script, I want another film with Snow. I could just think of a great sequel where Maggie Grace's character comes backan ex-flame. Then they have to team up to save whoever or the world. I'm so fine with that.
The latest action/thriller from Luc Besson (Taken) follows a similar formula of his other action films. Lockout jumps right into the action and refuses to slow down. The premise is somewhat original with many elements from other future isolated prison films. I think the best way to describe this movie without giving away too many details is that is a cross between John Carpenter's "Escape From New York" and David Fincher's "Alien3" (minus the alien of course).<br/><br/>Guy Pearce plays a wise cracking, hardened government agent who, following some misunderstanding with his superiors, has to go into space on a solo rescue mission for the President of the U.S.'s daughter (Maggie Grace) who is trapped on a run wild women-less prison holding murders and rapists used for conducting experiments. Okay maybe the premise is not too original. <br/><br/>Pearce's portrayal of Snow is one action movie fans will like, he can take a punch while delivering effortless one-liners (much like Bruce Willis did in Die Hard). But I will say the zippy comebacks get annoying at times, some were great zingers I will admit but there are some that were unnecessary. You got the idea Snow didn't give a crap about anything without them. Maggie Grace was a typical damsel in distress, nothing much else to add there. The villains were kind of creepy, Joseph Gilgun was off the wall but predictable and same could be said for the leader played by Vincent Regan. I actually thought of Peter StormareLangralthe major antagonist rather than the prisoners.<br/><br/>Like I say in the title, it has action from start to finish which has advantages and disadvantages. The very original special effects were fantastic and fight scenes were well done which made the movie go by very fast. The problem with so much action is that the story gets jumbled or rushed. Besson used this for "Taken" and it worked out for it, but with Lockout there were some things missing or flaws in the story. One was there seemed to be some references to the President being like a tyrant by Pearce's character but it is never really explained. <br/><br/>Overall it was a fun movie, great action with so-so acting and an interesting outer space setting. 7/10 for me, maybe if it were 15 minutes longer it could have made up for its flaws.
Directors Stephen St. Leger and James Mather fill the film's obvious narrative gaps with enough witty banter and tongue-in-cheek humor for audiences to overlook the subpar special effects used throughout.
Guy Pearce met with Luc Besson at the beginning of 2010 in LA to discuss the film and then met with Stephen St. Leger and James Mather a few months later. He thought the script felt original, which is always what he is looking for. He also liked the idea of playing an irreverent character like Snow. He was drawn to him because he's not the typical action hero. He exhibited a lazy and exhausted quality. It has quite some tradition that some of writer/producer Luc Besson's movies get censored for a more profitable PG-13 rating. The censorship for the PG-13 rating is obviously no unknown territory for the filmmakers in Besson's team since they managed to take the edge off it very well by applying almost every tool one could think of. Next to using harmless alternate takes or simply cutting something out, the PG-13 also delivers a censored dialogue, audio line and even digitally manufactured visual alterations (and maybe even blood that's not quiteredit is normally). A lot of effort to make a film that is usually aiming at experienced B-action buffs suitable for teenagers.
